Short Course Tutorials

Rheology: Chemistry, Theory, Mechanism and Application by Sam Morrall:

Saturday, 24th February: 1130-1300 hrs

This short course on Rheology reviews the basic principles of rheology including its definition and its influencers - chemical structure, morphology, and environmental conditions. The impact by various deformation forces including compression, tension, torque, and, particularly, shear will be reviewed to demonstrate the resulting viscosity and flow profiles (Newtonian, pseudoplastic, dilatant, thixotropic) as a function of shear stress, time, and temperature. Additionally, an examination of the chemistry of commercial rheological agents will help clarify their efficacy in various formulation types including waterborne and solventborne systems.

Production and Effective use Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) by Andy White

Saturday, 24th February: 1330-1500 hrs

Part 1 will look at the definition of the importance of the product, followed by detailed explanations of the common production processes, and then different surface treatments which define the various grades. There will also be a focus on the development of the global TiO2 market and likely future developments in the coming years. Part 2 will focus on how TiO2 is used in practice, focussing on how it produces opacity in coatings films and more specifically explaining how it functions, firstly in solvent based and latterly water-based systems, with detailed explanations of how to optimise its dispersion, stability and performance in each case. Part 3 will look at the effect of TiO2 on coatings colour especially in tinted systems, and then in a separate sub-section we will discuss the effect TiO2 has on coatings durability in exterior systems. Finally, the 4th section will focus on optimising Titanium Dioxide performance.
